Cooking Guide

Below are some of our favorite ways to enjoy Thomas Brothers Country Ham.  Whether you are serving a whole ham for loved ones or making a quick breakfast, our family and customers know the importance of cooking your country ham right.

Baking

Whole Ham

  • Completely skin and trim ham.  Soak overnight in cold water.

  • Wrap ham completely in heavy aluminum foil, in a manner to retain juices, and pour approximately 1.5 cups of water inside the aluminum wrap.

  • Bake at 350º F for approximately 20 minutes per pound.  Baking & Pan broil.

  • Cook to 160º F internal temperature and serve.

Sliced Ham

  • (Optional) Soak ham to reduce the saltiness in a bowl of water for 10-15 minutes if you desire. Then remove slices lightly shaking off excess water.

  • Wrap the slices in aluminum foil to preserve the natural juices during the baking.

  • Place in a pan and cook in the oven for approximately 30 minutes at 350º F.

Pan Broil or Fry

Whole Ham

  • (Optional) Soak ham overnight in cold water if desired to reduce saltiness

  • Slice the ham in 1/4" to 3/8" slices, trim the outside edges and score the fat.

  • Place the slices in covered frying pan set on medium heat of at least 350º F and cook minimum of one minute on each side.

  • Brown on both sides; however, be careful not to overcook as the country ham will become hard.

Sliced Ham

  • (Optional) Soak ham to reduce the saltiness in a bowl of water for 10-15 minutes if you desire. Then remove slices lightly shaking off excess water.

  • Peel slices apart but do not trim the fat before cooking.

  • Place the country ham slices in a covered frying pan set on medium heat and cook a minimum of one minute on each side until the meat is browned.

  • Feel free to trim excess fat after the country ham is cooked.

Traditional red Eye Gravy

  • Add water or coffee to ham drippings in the pan and stir.

  • Cook to 160º F and serve.
